Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to be a part of India’s squad for the ODI series against South Africa after the injury he suffered in Australia
India cricket team star Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to be a part of the ODI series between India and South Africa. The Mumbai batter had suffered a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding in the IND vs AUS 3rd ODI, which resulted in a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding. Iyer was then admitted to a local hospital and in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for several days before he was discharged.
Iyer ruled out of IND vs SA ODIs?
As per the Indian Express, a source claimed that Shreyas Iyer was doubtful for the IND vs SA ODI which is scheduled to begin from November 30 onwards. The source claimed that both the BCCI and the selection committee don’t want to rush his return. Iyer is an integral part of India’s ODI setup and was the best star for the team in the Champions Trophy 2025.
“He will take more time to be fully match fit and the board and selection committee doesn’t want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series,” a BCCI source said.
Shreyas Iyer’s injury
The incident occurred during the third ODI in Sydney on October 25, when Iyer dived full-length to complete a sharp, over the head catch of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. In trying to hold on to the ball, he landed awkwardly on his left side and immediately clutched his ribs. It looked like a routine fielding effort gone wrong, but scans later revealed internal trauma to his spleen, which required medical intervention.
Team physio Kamlesh Jain and medical staff assisted him off the field, and he was soon taken to hospital for scans. Initial assessments had suggested a rib injury, but the full extent became clear only after detailed imaging.
