Sanju Samson IPL trade deal almost done, CSK fail to get Washington Sundar from GT

Washington Sundar just played only six matches for GT in IPL 2025, but the franchise feels he would have a greater role to play next year.

A day does not pass when there isn’t any news from the IPL 2026 trade front. Now, with Sanju Samson‘s CSK deal almost done, and Ravindra Jadeja more-or-less certain to go to RR, another potential deal between CSK and GT seems have failed. As per a report in the Indian Express, Chennai’s dream of getting all-rounder Washington Sundar, from Gujarat, won’t materialise.

GT says no to Washington Sundar trade

It seems, Washi would have been the perfect candidate to replace now retired R Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja, but GT seem to have declined the offer, as the team feels the youngster could play a pivotal role, going forward. That also means, Chennai are left without the presence of a frontline Indian spinner, perhaps for the first time over the course of their existence.

CSK with limited spin options now

Yes, they have Noor Ahmad, but would have wanted an Indian to spearhead things, and now would have to rely on the auctions in December. In fact, they would be interested in looking at some young spinners to do the job for them.

Meanwhile, despite his brilliant abilities with the bat and bowl, Washington Sundar remains an under-utilised player in the IPL, mostly because of the impact player rule. In 2023, for SRH he played only six matches, while the next year, he could only manage two. As for GT, Washi played six matches in IPL 2025. That means, in 9 seasons of the tournament he has only managed to play 66 matches.
