Defending champions knocked out of IPL 2025 playoff race

With a washout in Bengaluru, Kolkata Knight Riders will not be able to make the Top 4 even if they beat SRH in their last game.

Reigning Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have become the 4th team to exit the IPL 2025 playoff race. After a washout in Bengaluru, KKR had to share points with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. But that means KKR cannot surpass 14 points anymore. Hence, they are knocked out.

With just five wins and two no results in 12 matches, KKR have bagged 12 points from 13 games. Even if they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last match, it won’t matter if MI win one out of the remaining two games.

IPL 2025 performance so far

As of May 17, KKR has a 5-6 record with two no-results. They are sixth on the points table. KKR have been inconsistent. They started the season with a loss to RCB. They only won two matches on the trot once. But by then, it was too late. AS KKR continued to play catch-up, their no result against PBKS did not help. Even at home, KKR failed to make it a fortress, winning only two out of seven matches.

12 May 7, 2025 CSK Kolkata Lost by 2 wickets
13 May 17, 2025 RCB Bengaluru NO RESULT

One look at their results will tell you that KKR has beaten poor teams and lost to the good ones. Their wins are over Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). These teams are currently the three worst sides in the IPL 2025. The losses are against all the teams better than them.

IPL 2025 Playoffs: KKR Qualification Scenarios

16 points is usually what guarantees your IPL 2025 playoffs qualification. That is what they cannot reach. The washout in Bengaluru dealt the knockout blow, eliminating them from the playoff race. Even if KKR win their last match, they won’t be able to outmatch MI on NRR, considering MI lose both matches. But as MI play against DC, who are ahead of KKR, they will score 15 points, ending KKR’s chances.
